Greetings my friends,
As we head into our ninth racing season, I can’t help but feel a deep sense of gratitude for all the hard work and dedication that has built Independence Youth Cycling (IYC) into what it is today. It’s truly incredible to reflect on our humble beginnings in 2016, when we started with just eight kids. Now, as we approach the 2024 race season, we are gearing up to support over 100 student-athletes across our league and series programs, with our outreach impacting even more children and families through partnerships with other non-profits. The magic of bikes continues to ripple through communities across greater Philadelphia, fostering a love for adventure and growth in families and young people.
Growing Stronger Together
Our five PICL/NICA teams have never been stronger. We’ve seen not only growth in numbers but also maturity among our teams, leaders and student-athletes. It’s been inspiring to watch them develop their skills, deepen their friendships, and push themselves to new heights. This weekend, we’re kicking off the 2024 season with a race in the Williamsport area—a perfect way to launch into another exciting year. I have no doubt our teams will perform with the same spirit, determination, and sportsmanship that have come to define IYC.
Local Dirt Success & Cyclocross Momentum
One of the highlights of this year has been the second Local Dirt event at Twining, where we hosted over 120 riders, complete with podium finishes! Watching the students compete and cheer for each other reminded me why we do this. It’s not just about racing; it’s about community, encouragement, and growth.
We’re also diving headfirst into cyclocross with the launch of our new program. Next weekend, we’ll be racing in our first event of the 2024 season at Twining Valley Park (TVP), and it’s been great to see the momentum building. Cyclocross has brought a fresh energy to our ranks, and I’m excited to see the Lehigh Valley racers take on the Fifth Street Cross series this week.
A Fleet of Opportunity
We’ve also made strides in expanding our bike fleet, which now includes cyclocross bikes. Our fleet has nearly 50 bikes, enabling us to equip even more kids who don’t have access to their own. Bikes shouldn’t be a barrier to experiencing the joy of cycling, and this fleet growth ensures that we can continue making cycling accessible to all.
Partnering for a Greater Impact
Our connections with other non-profits continue to grow, allowing us to reach new communities across Philadelphia. From our collaborations with the Tookany/Tacony-Frankford Watershed Partnership to the Riverfront North Partnership, we’re finding new ways to engage kids through cycling. These partnerships are a vital part of our mission to spread the love of biking and bring its benefits—confidence, character, and community building—to as many youth as possible.
USA Cycling Grant Powers Fish Fest Success
I’m excited to share that Independence Youth Cycling was awarded a USA Cycling grant earlier this year, which played a crucial role in our participation at Fish Fest 2024 on June 1 at the Frankford Boat Launch. This grant enabled us to expand our Bikes on Demand program and host youth-focused Skills Clinics and Guided Rides throughout the event. By providing bikes and equipment, we made it easier for young people, especially those from underserved communities, to experience the joy of cycling. Fish Fest proved to be an incredible opportunity to introduce more kids to biking, teamwork, and outdoor adventure.
A Shoutout to Our Coaches
I want to take a moment to acknowledge and thank our coaches. Your energy and commitment make all the difference in the world. Whether you’re a ride supporter or a lead coach, each of you plays a critical role in making this program a success. I’m humbled by your dedication and excited for what we’ll achieve together this season.
As we roll into 2024, I’m filled with anticipation for the adventures ahead. Here’s to a year of growth, triumphs, and of course—plenty of riding! See you on the trails.
John
