Independence Youth Cycling believes access to trails and open spaces should not be taken for granted. IYC offers environmental stewardship programs in partnership with local land managers, trail networks, environmental organizations and municipalities.
NICA Teen Trail Corps
NICA’s Teen Trail Corps provides NICA student-athletes the opportunity to serve and give their time towards bike related advocacy activities. Supported by REI and the Walton Family Foundation, it is a gateway for NICA student-athletes into the world of advocacy. Student-athlete activities are categorized into five badges that may be earned. The first four are Speak, Serve, Ride and Respect. Once a student-athlete has earned all four, they receive the fifth badge, “Teen Trail Corps Captain.”
NICA envisions a future where NICA student-athletes are advocating for and making a significant impact on our cycling environment.
Friends of Cresheim Trail, Friends of the Wissahickon, Upper Dublin Township
IYC partners with local municipal and community groups to give student athletes hand-on experience with environmental stewardship, advocacy and trail maintenance activities.
Advisory Services to New Local Trail Development
IYC’s team, including Teen Trail Corp student athletes, collaborate with land managers developing new trail networks. For example, IYC is currently working with Upper Dublin Township in Montgomery County PA as they build out a mountain bike trail network at a local golf course turned open space.
