The Dynamic Duo: How Our Head Coaches and Team Directors Keep Us Rolling
When you think about what makes our teams thrive, it all comes down to teamwork—on and off the bike. Behind every smooth practice, well-organized race day, and engaged community of riders and families, there’s a Dynamic Duo making it happen: our Head Coaches and Team Directors.
These two roles are distinct, but they work hand in hand to ensure every rider gets the best experience possible. Here’s a look at how they make it all come together.
The Team Director: The Strategist Behind the Scenes
Think of the Team Director as the architect of the season. Their focus is on team logistics, planning, and communication, making sure everything is in place so that coaches and riders can focus on the ride.
Some key responsibilities:
✅ Managing rider and coach registrations (PitZone, TeamSnap, and pre-registration)
✅ Organizing off-the-bike activities and team events
✅ Handling insurance requests and administrative needs
✅ Keeping families informed with season communications
✅ Overseeing team finances, sponsorships, and fundraising
✅ Helping recruit new riders and coaches to grow the program
Without a Team Director keeping things running smoothly, the season would be, well, messy. They’re the ones making sure our coaches and athletes have everything they need to focus on riding.
The Head Coach: The On-the-Bike Leader
While the Director handles logistics, the Head Coach is the heart of rider development. They’re responsible for practice planning, skill-building, and making sure each rider gets the right mix of challenge and encouragement.
Some of the key things they do:
✅ Organizing and leading team practices
✅ Assessing new riders and helping them develop skills
✅ Keeping an eye on coach certifications and mentoring new coaches
✅ Planning pre-rides and race day strategies
✅ Deciding ride activities at events and ensuring a safe, fun experience
✅ Communicating practice schedules and weather updates
If the Team Director is the architect, the Head Coach is the builder—taking the plan and turning it into action on the trail.
Where the Magic Happens: Collaboration is Key
While each role has its own focus, the Director and Head Coach work together constantly to make sure the season is successful. Some of their shared responsibilities include:
🚴 Season Planning – Mapping out the year, from practices to race events
🌧️ Weather Calls – Deciding whether to ride or cancel based on conditions
📅 Race Day Leadership – Managing rosters, planning team strategies, and handling logistics
🛠 Equipment & Resources – Deciding what gear to buy and how to allocate team resources
💬 Team Communications – Making sure riders and parents know what to expect
When the Team Director and Head Coach are on the same page, the whole team benefits.
How IYC Supports Its Teams
At IYC, we know that running a successful youth cycling team is a big job, which is why we support our Team Directors and Head Coaches every step of the way. From handling team finances and sponsorships to recruiting and training coaches, we make sure our leaders have the tools they need to create a great experience for our riders.
And let’s be real—neither of these roles can (or should) do it all alone. That’s why we encourage delegation—great teams run on shared effort, and the best leaders know how to bring in the right people to help.
We’re Growing—And We Need You! 🚴♂️
IYC is expanding, and we need more amazing people to help us keep rolling! Whether you want to get involved on the bike as a coach or ride leader, or off the bike in communications, development, or fundraising, there’s a place for you in our community.
